Before the freedom proclamation of Indonesia, South Sulawesi, consisted of independent kingdoms which were divided into four ethnics included Buginese, Makassarese, Mandarese, and Torajanes. According to the cultural history documentation of South Sulawesi, there were three great influential kingdoms comprise Kingdoms of Gowa, Luwu, and Bone. Besides that, the other kingdoms were also existed. Some of them were holding out in with great kingdom and some of them are hold ouf on autonomy.
Different than forming the other provinces in Indonesia, South Sulawesi was formed to be a province on the inclination of the kings and societies in this region. The kings declared to unite into Republic of Indonesia until the South Sulawesi existed as one of the provinces of Indonesia through the ratification of the act number 21,1950 and Makassar was decided as seat of government. With this regulation, south Sulawesi was divided into 21 regencies and 2 territories of jurisdiction include Makassar and Parepare.
The status of Sulawesi as province administratively was ended through the act number 47,1960 and formed to be autonomy of South and Southeast Sulawesi province with Makassar as the capital, and Central and North Sulawesi province with Manado as the capital. After 4 years, the act number 13,1964 was formedto signify the separation between South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi.. Thus, South Sulawesi had the form of autonomy in 1964. Perfection is continuously done by forming the act number 5,1974 regarding the principal of the government admnistration in region. Consequently, the administrative regions and the autonomies were united to become “ a regency/kabupaten : or municipality and province of South Sulawesi. Furthermore, the South Sulawesi province was divided into 23 regencies/municipalities and 2 admnistrative territories included Palopo in Luwu regency, Watampone in Bone regency. The significant things was the change of naming the capital of South Sulawesi, Makassar to became Ujung Pandang which was solidified in governmental regulation number 51, 1971 of the government official gazette of Republic of Indonesia number 65, 1971.
